This poster features a curated collection of sources following a timeline of a chosen alternative design history outside of the western canon. I chose to depict the history of graphic design in Chinese newspaper and its relationship with political and social unrest.
RESEARCH
In addition to using university archives and online news sources to collect content for my poster, I experimented with different methods of digital image treatment. Since newspapers are naturally very detailed and visually stimulating, I wanted to enforce a degree of similarity on my images in order to prevent the poster form becoming too chaotic. In the end, I decided to convert all the images to black and white (except for some color entries near the end of the timeline) and adjust their contrast settings until they felt visually cohesive.

PROCESS

During the iterative process, I experimented with the flow of reading order and conveying different type hierarchies through scale and color. I wanted for the entire poster to emulate the feeling of reading a newspaper without being too overt. Additionally, I made sure to follow a system with having the caption always below an entry to prevent confusion. Sticking to a strict column structure also made it easier to arrange each block of text.
FINAL DELIVERABLES
MOTION GRAPHIC TEASER
24" X 33" POSTER
I also made a motion graphic teaser for the poster. In the video, I emphasize newspaper's tactile quality as well as highlight core themes of the poster such as propaganda and rebellion.
